The Mnichovická Primary School is located in Kolín, in the area called Zálabí, as the name suggests, behind the river, towards the historical centre of the town. Although the site and the school building itself are not subject to monument protection, the design is developed with respect to the surrounding roof landscape, the panorama of Jirásek Square and the context of the listed St. Vitus Church with its cemetery.

The existing primary school was built in several phases. The original historicizing building in Mnichovická Street was built in 1886 as a two-storey building in the Neo-Renaissance style. The third floor was added in 1933. In the 1990s, a gym and a second wing of the building with barrier-free access and cloakrooms were added. This wing was also later extended by one floor.

The aim of the roof extension project is to increase the capacity of the oldest school building and to provide barrier-free access by building a lift in the courtyard. The current capacity of the school is 400 pupils. The roof extension proposes to accommodate four tribal classrooms for thirty pupils, increasing the capacity of the school by 120 to 520 pupils. The existing loft has been assessed as unsuitable for loft conversion due to the low structural heights. A new, mostly steel roof truss is planned to allow the existing attic space to be increased.

A characteristic feature of the existing building are two gables with tympanums on the southern façade, which are strongly applied to the space of Jirásek Square. The new roof shape is designed to allow the main cornice to be retained and the tympanums to be restored in a higher position. This will create a 1.2 m high strip of masonry below the tympanums, which corresponds to the high order frieze.

The proposed roof is mansard. Above the main cornice, a vertical roof section will be created in which windows are placed to allow views out of the classroom area and the school corridor. The pitched part of the roof follows the original 31° slope to maintain the character of the roofscape. The attic space is lit in all classrooms by skylights in the peak of the roof.

On the courtyard façade, an elevator and a relaxation area for pupils are proposed. The new mass is conceived as a steel structure with a glazed facade with structural joins in the glass surfaces. The lift will allow barrier-free access to all floors of the old school building. The base station will be in the cloakrooms, which are on the 1st floor level of the extension and accessible by the existing main entrance.

We propose to use the existing roof over the single storey changing rooms in the courtyard as an outdoor relaxation area, of which the school has a shortage. The new roof terrace will be accessible from the 2nd floor of the extension and by outdoor stairs from the 2nd floor of the old building.
