Primary school Pod Skalkou
The plot for the Primary School is located on the northeastern edge of Mníšek below Skalka Hill on a southeast-facing slope overlooking the countryside. The site is directly linked to the history of mining and iron ore processing. The Skalka mine adit, which was used to transport mined material to the former lumpworks, runs directly under the school site. In the neighbourhood there is the quarter Staré sídliště, a residential area built in the 1950s for smelters. This theme has been with us during design development and was an inspiration for us in the choice of materials and colour scheme. The proposed mass forms a compact block with an open inner courtyard and reflects the scale of the industrial buildings typical of the north-eastern edge of Mníšek. The saw-tooth roof illuminating the common corridors of the school refer to the rugged roofscape of the lumpworks area.
The horizontal mass of the school with two above-ground and one underground floor is cut into the ground due to the slope of the site. From the landscape to the north it appears as a single storey, towards the housing estate as a two storey and in the south east corner the underground storey rises above the ground to allow access to the courtyard and the Art School.
The house is set on the south of the site in a location closer to the town, leaving space for an outdoor sports field to the north. It is designed as a compact block with an open courtyard in the middle at ground floor level. The western edge of the building is parallel to the considered street identified in the masterplan.
The school, with a capacity of 540 pupils, is divided into a west wing for the entrance area, canteen and first grade, an east wing for the second grade, specialized classrooms, administration and the Art school (with a separate section in the first floor). The south wing is used for studio classrooms, first grades, a school club, psychological counseling and after-school clubs. Gyms are proposed in the northern part of the building with a link to the outdoor sports field. The key space of the school is the spacious corridors which not only serve as a communication space but are designed as a living space. Separately for the first and second grade, a central space between the classrooms creates a play and relaxation landscape illuminated by skylights offering opportunities for informal learning, sports activities and presentation of pupils' school activities. Corridor overlooks visually connect the space with the ground floor, while bringing in natural lighting.
